Goals | February 2012

And just like that, January is gone. Whew. January was full of changes with the business. We worked in the office more, almost completing the flooring project, rearranged, painted, etc. Shooting was kept to a minimum so that we could work on all these projects. Here are the January goals….   1. Work on office (I won’t even go into specifics :-/  ) We’ll count this as complete! 2. Create some organization so that I don’t just stack papers on my desk. Much better at this…. but I still have papers to file! I think I need a filing day. 3. Do some practice shooting with Jeremy! Didn’t happen 🙁 Jeremy was sick a lot this month 4. Attend FerShops in Charleston! Done & Blogged! 5. Finish editing Heather & Graham’s wedding Done & sending them out tomorrow! 6. Finish editing Anna Beth’s newborn pics Done! 7. Blog lots 🙂 Done!   February…. 1. Order albums galore…. currently 8 need finishing and ordering 2. Do some serious filing, blah. 3. Finish editing 2 baby sessions & blog 4. Photograph Maggie & Rory’s engagement 5. Deep clean my house (we’re having guests in 2 weeks!) 6. Enjoy some down time with hubby! 7. Deliver boudoir albums….oohlala! 8. Be more frugal…. we’re saving to start construction on our beach house!   …. a little snapshot of my January Instagrams 🙂  (yes, I chopped my hair back off!)

Business | FerShop

A few weeks ago I headed to Charleston at 6AM, nervous and excited. I was going to partake in the FerShop by Fer Juaristi, a photographer from Mexico. There were a handful of other photographers there, including a few I knew from flickr. We talked a lot about how and why Fer is “different” from other photographers, how he’s OK with scaring off couples that aren’t his kind of client, how he approaches photoshoots with a totally different eye than the rest of us AND (most importantly….) why harsh light isn’t so scary! Rob & Meg joined us for the day, serving as our models. They were spectacular! So in love, so easy going. (F5, Portra 400… the rest are digital)

Class | Camera 101

Did you receive a DSLR for Christmas? Or maybe you’ve had it a while….. do you always use it on “P” or an “Auto” function??? Did you know that by using it this way, your camera is making ALL the decisions for you? Do the terms ISO, shutter speed, f-stops, focus, and light meter scare you?? One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing people use their high dollar cameras on auto (we see this at EVERY wedding we shoot!!). You can get much better photographs just by learning about what different settings do and how to manipulate them. We will also touch on lighting, what’s good, bad and ugly! I happen to be a Nikon & Minolta (now Sony) shooter, but Dana MacKay will be with us part of the day to help out with those of you who shoot Canon!   So here’s the info! Where: My office in downtown Davidson When: March 31st, 10AM-4PM Perks: Lunch provided & a goody bag 🙂 Price: $125 Who: Limited to 6 people!   You’ll need to have a DSLR camera, at least 1 lens, a memory card & charged battery because we’ll be practicing our skills 🙂 Once you have signed up, you will receive a questionnaire to complete. Wanna come???? Sign up here!

Business | Unsolicited Advice II

Hi All! I’m back with another installment of ‘unsolicited advice’ for other business owners (this doesn’t just apply to photographers!). Today, it’s all about taking care of your clients. I talked last time about customer service. Today I want to expand a little on that, specifically on knowing & pampering clients to make them feel special 🙂 I want my brides to know that it’s a special thing to be a JJH bride. We want your wedding experience with us to be more than Jeremy and I showing up on your wedding day, taking photos and being a go-between to get albums, prints & canvases. Here’s an example: In 2010 I sent all our clients our Christmas card, this year we thought we could do better…. I mean, it doesn’t take much to do better than just a card, right?! I admit I procrastinated when it came to this project, but I’m glad to say it was accomplished! I initially wanted to send custom chocolate bars with our logo…. but with too short notice, the company couldn’t do it. (note to self, plan ahead!). I placed an order for the regular bars, and patiently waited. I got the call they were ready & then realized I had NO CLUE how to mail them! I needed small boxes, but they couldn’t be slathered in USPS… that’s not fancy! So I ordered 5×7 print boxes… then patiently waited for them to arrive. They showed up on our porch & then realized the chocolate was going to slide around in the box…. better find something to keep them stable… and bubble wrap was out of the question. I found some pretty, pink “shreds” at Target… perfect! I was on my way to getting these puppies sent! I spent a few hours packaging & shipping the week of Christmas. I then said a prayer they wouldn’t arrive a melted mess. Thankfully, I got many sweet notes from brides of how much they loved the little box that showed up in their mailbox, unexpectedly. I wish I’d taken better photos, but in the fury of getting these out, all I had time to do was instagram 🙂 Here’s to making our couples feel extra special in 2012!
