Beach House | Learning Experience

Last weekend we met our new neighbor at the beach, his home was built by the same builder as ours and we’ve patiently watched his home go up over the last year (even walked through it last fall before he moved in). We got to talking about things we would do different or change… he didn’t have too many things, but we did… well, I did. I hate confrontation, and most of my gripes are due to the fact I didn’t speak up… and some are because we were 4 hours away and couldn’t have eyes on the house at all times to catch things. Nothing that I would change would make a difference in how our house functions, it’s all aesthetic (but lets face it, when you work your butt off to have what you want… you want what you want!) 1. The Master Bath. I kinda felt like the master bath was my little oasis to design, but it just didn’t come out as perfect as it did on paper. When we went to the plumber to pick out baths & faucets there was ONE option for a claw-foot tub… and it was in a catalog, not on the showroom floor. I felt backed into a corner, but I didn’t fight it. I approved it. I hate that tub. It’s tiny. It WILL get replaced at some point with a tub in which I can actually stretch my legs out straight. My other issue with our bath… is the shower…. oh there are so many things wrong with that shower. The tile job sucks (I’ll leave it at that and no go into detail). The shower is actually supposed to have a 1/2 wall on the side facing the toilet, but that got overlooked. I saw this in the framing process, but assumed it just wasn’t done being framed… wrong. I thought the shower was going to have frame-less glass… nope. That stupid silver trim stares me in the face. The shower wall is supposed to have a built in shelf for shampoo, soap, etc. but that didn’t happen either. 2. The Kitchen Island. I love the layout of our kitchen, it functions really well and has tons of counter space…. however, I wish the island was a little wider (meaning the overhang where the bar-stools are would be deeper). I also wish there were built ends that spanned the width of the island (like this… see how the stools are tucked in ). I’m sure it doesn’t help that the stools are extra deep! I feel like when you sit mid-island in one of the 2 middle stools your plate is way too close to the cook-top and little ones might easily get burned. ***As an aside, I often see designer kitchens with the sink in the island… which I purposefully did not do… I’d much rather cook and chat with people sitting at the island, than have my back to them if the cook-top had been where the sink is! ps: if you missed it on instagram… I painted the island navy!! So… my advice if you are building or remodeling… do all you can to check in on progress, ask questions if something doesn’t look right and know exactly what you’re getting (and send it back if you don’t love it!) Anyone want to buy a gently used claw-foot tub? Pick up only 😉

Gear | What I shoot with!

Fairly often I get asked about the gear I shoot with… a lot of times it’s at weddings by a wedding guest or sometimes it’s a person looking to get into photography. Now, I want to preface this post by saying this is what I shoot with… as a lifestyle wedding a portrait photographer. I do have some studio-esqe items that are not pictured, but not many… I’ve listed everything below! I have accumulated a bunch of different items, bought things I saw others using because I “needed that to take perfect photos”….  I don’t discourage trying out different things to learn and work them into your workflow, but if you don’t use it, or don’t like the result… sell it! I’ve bought and sold tons of gear over the years… because those items were not the right fit for me. Items not pictured: Nikon D700 & Nikkor 50mm 1.4 (shooting with them!), loads of memory cards, backdrop paper & tons of batteries! The camera bags I carry depends on the event. For weddings I normally carry my Built NY camera bag (purple one above), and for portraits I carry my InCase sling backpack. Both are great, but when you’re on the go-go-go with weddings, I think the Built NY bag is easier. I wear it cross-body and leave it unzipped so I can easily switch lenses fast. It also has those handles so I can pick up and set down easily without anything falling out. Things I plan to add this year: Nikon D750 and another Nikon 80DX. Want to learn more about photography? I offer Camera 101 in either a one on one or group setting. Contact me if you’re interested!

Tropical Packaging

I love for my clients entire experience to be complete, and that means final products need to arrive in a nice package…. whether it’s prints, albums, discs, canvases, etc. I want them all ‘pretty’. I know I always love it when I get something from nice companies like Anthropologie or Kate Spade and purchases are always tissue wrapped with bows…. much nicer than things thrown in a mailing package…. my clients should be afforded that same luxury and feeling of quality. I also love when I can incorporate personal touches for the clients…. Alan & Ashley’s wedding colors were navy & teal…. and since they were married in Jamaica I knew when I spotted that card from Lily & Val on Instagram it was a must! I normally use my own stationary, but it was just too cute not to include!

Christmas | 2014

Merry Christmas!!!! I hope you’ve all stayed on the nice list this year. I thought I was being super proactive, ahead of the game, smart, ect. ect. ect. when I had Melanie snap a few photos of us back at LABOR DAY for our Christmas card. Too bad it took me to well into December to actually finish designing them and getting them ordered (oops). There are a few family members who’ll get your card tomorrow night and Christmas eve because I simply couldn’t locate your address fast enough to get them in the mail before leaving town. And to the gentleman who walked by and asked “tacky Christmas card photo?’ The response I should have given you was “What about this is tacky?!” I sent 2 postcards this year, a client one to all those I’ve photographed (or photographers I’ve shot with) and one personal one.
