Wedding | Katie & Jake

Jeremy & I had the privilege to kick off our 2012 wedding season with a bang! Katie & Jake had booked us nearly a year in advance, and we had been anticipating this first wedding of the season for a few months. I can’t say enough good things about Asbury Park Grove, where they were married. It’s a small, simple venue…. but it has everything you need. It’s in a convenient location, has stunning landscaping and FABULOUS food! Another important thing…. the people there made sure to keep us in the loop, and made sure we were taken care of… which we can’t always say about venues. It makes our day go so much smoother, a good coordinator/wedding planner is PRICELESS!   To see all photos and to order prints from Katie & Jake’s wedding click here!

Camera 101

Happy Tuesday All! I’m here with some very exciting news…. I’m hosting 2 more Camera 101 classes this year!!!! On March 31st I hosted the first class for 3 lovely ladies. They showed up with their cameras, eager and excited to learn how to take better photographs. Our syllabus lead us through the camera mechanics in the morning, some more intense lighting concepts later and even a little practice 🙂 Unfortunately, I was a bad photographer and didn’t take a single picture during the class 🙁 I’ll do better next time, promise! So…. if you want to learn about using your camera on M instead of P or Auto…. this class is perfect for you! Here’s what Katherine had to say about the class… ” Camera 101 was an informative introduction to my SLR camera. I was afraid to use anything but the “Auto” setting until I learned about what all those confusing terms meant – now I am much more comfortable using the Manual function and experimenting with the pictures I’m taking. Jessica was a great teacher, her explanations were clear and she has a lot of patience. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who just got a “fancy pants” camera that they would like to get to know better 🙂 “   Wanna come?? We have TWO new dates open…. here’s the info…. Where: My office in downtown Davidson When: July 29 OR October 7, 1230PM-430PM Perks: Snacks & Goody bag provided! Price: $145 Who: Limited to 4 people in each class!   Email me at info@jjhortonphotography.com to sign up!

Business | Taxes.

I know you jumped for joy when you saw the title of this post 😉 I want to talk about being a small business owner today…. AKA how the government is sucking the life from my soul. Up until I started this business, I was a pretty apathetic American…. I didn’t have a good grasp on government, and how taxes effect the small business owner…. because…. well… I wasn’t a business owner yet. It didn’t effect me and I didn’t care. NOW I CARE.  I love the confidence my friends all have in me… “Jessica, you need to quit your day job.” “Jessica, you need to focus on photography full time, you can make it!” Or my most recent favorite from bride, Maggie…  (Maggie, I love you and so wish I could!) “Jessica, you need to quit your job and help me plan my wedding.” I’m here today to educate you. I know that most Americans pity those who do such important jobs, like teachers, firefighters, police, etc. and get paid such a small salary. Here’s why you should also pity those of us who are self employed (along with those other professions). _________________________________________________________________________________________ In 2011 my business grossed just over $32,000…. that sounds AWESOME… right?? Wrong. I spent about $13,000 in expenses… so that takes us down to $19,000 automatically. And just for clarification, our expenses are…. gear (we bought a lens, several flashes and batteries, etc.), rent (I pay $397 a month), internet ($80 a month), phone ($80 a month), pretty packaging to send your CDs, albums and prints in, office furnishings, shipping costs, sample products, hotels when we travel for weddings, etc. (oh yeah and GAS!… but we deduct mileage, not what we spend on filling our tank) THEN…. we pay sales & use tax each quarter… so that 7.25% we collect from you… yep…. goes straight to Uncle Sam. Use tax is tax we pay on all the crap we buy that isn’t taxed when we buy it. So that $950 lens we bought… wasn’t taxed…. cha-ching-cha-ching…. THEN…. we pay estimated taxes. You know when you get your paycheck & it has all that money taken out…. yep, we gotta pay that too. Currently we pay ~$1,200 to Federal and ~$300 to State… EVERY QUARTER. So… we had $19,000 left after expenses…. subtract about $500 each quarter for sales & use taxes (this is rough, I don’t have our actual numbers in front of me) x4 quarters… = $2,000 Now we’re down to $17,000 subtract about $1,500 each quarter for estimated taxes = $6,000. So, I only got to take home about $11,000 for all of 2011.   I can only think of how many hours and hours and hours I slaved over this business (building it, networking, shooting events, driving to and from events, editing, blogging, etc.) and how many weekends and nights I gave up free time…. time away from my dogs, my family, my friends…. to only bring home $11,000. And we wonder why so many small business owners fold up and quit after only a few short months or years?   So, when you hire a professional, legitimate, tax-paying photographer, and you think their CD of images cost a lot, or their prints are pricey…. understand the back end, and everything we pay for…. We too want to live above poverty.

Wedding | Being Thrifty

If you know me personally, you know I’m a bargain hunter. I got that gene honest, my mother was The. Bargain. Queen. You may or may not know I am a TJ Maxx poster child and I’ve got the credit card to prove it. I also get the Sunday paper delivered strictly for the coupon section…. read numerous coupon blogs and shop almost exclusively from the grocery weekly circular and clearance sections. If I knew about all these great things when I was living off $850 a month, making minimum wage WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE…. my money would have gone A LOT farther! I had to get creative 3 months after getting married, Jeremy lost his job….. his well paying job. We were left to live off my non-profit salary and unemployment. Thankfully, we had paid cash for Jeremys car, mine had a low payment, and our mortgage was lower than most apartment rents. We were going to be fine….. but we needed to live a little more slim. I discovered the Sunday paper and coupons…. Now… you can save plenty by couponing…. but we’re talking about weddings, right? So where am I going with all this….. EBATES! If you aren’t familiar with Ebates… familiarize yourself. When I first discovered it, I thought…. this is sketch… too good to be true…. instant cash back? No way. …. BUT YES WAY! I use this site all the time, especially to buy expensive camera gear. (and clothes, and other things I don’t need). They are affiliated with many online retailers, and offer a % cash back on purchases. Each vendor has a set %, and each day their is a daily double… sometimes more than one. I’m letting you know all this because today I got my daily email from them letting me know what the daily doubles are….                   and it was all about weddings!! Here are the deals for purchases today…. they even highlighted registries!! (So buy your friends getting married, their wedding & shower gifts today!) Nordstrom: normally 3%, today 5% J Crew, Saks, Macy’s, Target : normally 3%, today 6% (all great shops for wedding attire & registries!) DSW & Sephora: normally 4%, today 8% (mmm shoes & good makeup… love!) Minted (awesome for invitations!!): normally 5%, today 10%!   So get to saving for your big day (or be a good friend & buy something off someone’s registry)!!!!   and just for good measure… a photo of my favorite.
